Caves 7–10

Four small marl-terrace caves excavated in a single season; sparse but distinctive contents.

When

1955

Discovered by

Roland de Vaux's excavation team

Headline finds

Greek papyri, phylactery cases, a single inscribed ostracon

How it was discovered

During the 1955 season de Vaux's team cleared the remaining collapsed chambers of the marl terrace immediately south of the settlement. Erosion had destroyed most of the fronts of these caves, so only what had fallen deep inside survived.

Why it matters

Cave 7's all-Greek contents point to Greek-reading members or visitors; Cave 8's scroll tabs and leatherworking debris suggest an on-site workshop for storing and repairing manuscripts.
